Salary negotiation is a criticalcomponent of your job search.
Your success will depend onhow you frame your thinking.

Recognizing that negotiating salary is a normal, often expected
part of the process can greatly increase your confidence and effectiveness. In fact, an employer may wonder about an agreement reached too quickly without negotiation!

  • Get what you want. When you consider a job offer, especially if it is low, it's important
to think about how this will make you feel. Will you feel undervalued? Will it undermine
your attitude, work relationships and performance?

  • Gain negotiation experience and increase your confidence. You will get a better
idea of how your skills and experience are valued in the market. Every time you negotiate,
even if the job is turned down, you gain experience and are better prepared for the next time!

  • Setting the stage. Salary negotiation sends a powerful message to your future boss that
you are a person that knows your value and will speak up for what you want. Consider
that the salary you come in at will be what all raises will be based on in the future!

  • Creating a win-win for both parties. A collaborative conversation around negotiating
a job offer gives you an opportunity for both sides to get some of what they want on the table
and feel their needs have been addressed.

  • Avoid discussing any dollar figures too soon! The optimal time is when an offer is being made.
  • Discussions too early in the process may result in being eliminated as a candidate. You may
be perceived as a lightweight or overqualified.
  • When asked salary requirements on applications, put open or negotiable. If a number is
    required, put a range.
  • If forced to give a firm dollar figure before an offer, provide a range and follow with the
questions, "Is this amount within the range for the job we're discussing?"
  • Research your market value. Enter negotiation knowing your skills and their worth. Be aware
of the difference between what you were making and what is realistic outside of the company
    or in a particular market.
  • Have in mind 3 salary figures. These may vary for different jobs offers and should be
considered each time - your bottom line (never disclose!), what you want, range 10-20%
    above what you want.
